Academic Success at NAMS
Dear Parents and Community,

Below this brief note you will find links to each of our content areas. Within each link you will find a syllabus for each of the classes in content areas we offer. Hopefully, this will be a useful tool as you support your students in their efforts toward academic success here at Neil Armstrong. As you look at each of the syllabi and discover the level of rigor and expectation in each class, please be thoughtful about how you might continue to support your student’s progress. Please remember to check their agendas daily – when it is convenient for you – and to set a time and a place for homework each day. Even if your child reports that they do not have HW, using that time and place for reading would be excellent. Research is clear about the positive impact daily reading will have on our students.

These documents will be updated for 2nd semester.

The school administration have reviewed all existing school safety procedures for Neil Armstrong Middle School and the district will continue to work with local law enforcement officials on reviewing and updating proper safety procedures as necessary.    Some of the safety measures in place include the following:  All visitors must enter through the main office entry way; All other exterior doors are locked during the school day; All visitors must check in and sign in at the main office; All visitors must wear a visible visitor badge when on site; All staff are directed to report any individual on campus without a visitor badge to the main office immediately.  The Forest Grove School District takes school safety very seriously as it is our top priority in meeting the needs of all students and staff.

Titan Gardening Class Needs Your Help!
NAMS Gardening Class is working to raise money to purchase tools to use in their garden. These students need basic gardening tools (rakes, pruners, hoes and shovels) to clear, prepare and care for the school garden.  We are using   DonorChoose.org as an online charity that makes it easy to help classrooms in need.  Please visit the donor site and help us purchase our equipment for the TITAN GARDEN.  We will post pictures of our progress.
Congratulations, Mr. Joye
Mr. Sol Joye, one of NAMS social study teachers, received the Oregon Department of Education's "History Teacher of the Year."  On Thursday, October 25th, all the students at NAMS gathered in our gym to honor Mr. Joye.

Dr. Samuel Henry, Professor and Member of the State Board of Education awarded Mr. Joye with a $1000.00 check and his certificate, honoring him as the "History Teacher of the Year."

We are SO PROUD OF YOU MR. JOYE!

A Note from the Principal
Dear parents and students:

We appreciate your patience as we tackle the issues within our schedule.  Please know that we are working around the clock to fix all the problems we found when we switched our student information system.  While I believe Synergy will be a fine system for our staff, students and parents to use, the change-over produced some significant difficulties in our students' schedules.

We are working to meet as many requests as possible and will continue to work to have all schedules in order by Tuesday afternoon.  Many parents and students are making requests to be in our Honors program classes; while this is excellent, we are overfilled in most sections and are not able to meet all requests in this area. We will work to resolve this issue in our second semester.

It has been a great start to the school year despite our schedule challenges. This has been, in large part, due to the attitudes our students have brought to school: positive and flexible.  Beyond that our staff, as usual, has been focused on building relationships with our students and have minimized the impact.

We are looking forward to a great school year and expect to be on track by Wednesday morning.

Thanks.
Brandon Hundley
